The Knitwear Co-operative was established in 1983 and produces hand-loomed knitwear in pure new wool. The emblem we use is derived from the ancient Gaelic name for Sherkin - Inish Arcain, meaning Island of the Seapigs or porpoises. Our designs are both original and classic and feature hand fired matching buttons. The wool used comes from a small village in Donegal with a rugged landscape similar to that of Sherkin. It's colours are rich and different, reflecting the tones and texture of the country, with its rocky seashore, wild seas and independent people. Sherkin Island Knitwear is a registered member of the Craft Council of Ireland. For all the Irish sweaters we have known, these Sherkin Island ones are without rival. Made in soft, thick Donegal wools, they are richly coloured, the deep blues flecked in purple, the greens accented by hints of crimson. And they are styled handsomely, with a variety of necklines and in some instances charming hand-painted buttons...
