Sherkin Island is a mere ten minutes by boat from the small fishing port of Baltimore on the mainland. There is an excellent ferry service which operates almost hourly until 20:30 in the summer months, and is scaled down in the winter. The Island is located in the very beautiful area of Roaring Water Bay and is one of the famed Carbery's Hundred Isles. It is three miles in length and one and a half miles wide which makes it a very easy place to explore. The island is home to a 15th Century Franciscan Friary, and one of the ruined O'Driscoll Castles, Dun-na-Long, which are to be found in many locations in this neighborhood of West Cork.
Sherkin also boasts several sandy beaches which are unique in this part of Ireland, and make an excellent place for families to spend hot summer days.
