Horseshoe Harbour is a very beautiful area to walk around and is the only circular route on the island. If you are a good swimmer you can take a dip here, but as there is no beach here and the bay is deep, common sense should be used. Children should not, under any circumstances, be allowed to swim here unsupervised.
This is the smallest townland on the island consisting of only 45 acres. In the mid 19th century it had a population of 22 and was the site of the slate quarries which were worked extensively, with the slate being exported to Wales.
Sherkin Lighthouse, also located in this townland, is set high on the cliff above the harbours mouth. This lighthouse was built in 1835 and was operated manually until the 1970s when it became automatic.
Directly across the bay from Sherkin Lighthouse is Baltimore beacon; not an advert for milk, but a landmark for ships approaching this harbour!
