Sherkin
(population 130) the ancestral home of the O'Driscoll clan is the most accessible island
in Ireland - only ten minutes by ferry from the fishing port of Baltimore. It is small
enough to give every visitor a special welcome - but large enough to provide as varied a
range of pursuits as anyone could wish. The island boasts a
bewildering variety of landscapes. Panoramic Atlantic views from the hill tops, fuchsia
scented byways and on the western shore, the finest sandy beaches for miles around. The
Abbey, just by the landing place, was built by the Franciscan monks in the fifteenth
century and is a fine example of medieval monastic architecture.
Wild flowers abound here - Sherkin is second only to The Burren in its
botanical richness. Many birds breed on the island and rare migrants pass through in
Spring and Autumn while butterflies and dragonflies adorn the lanes.
You will find good fishing on the rocky headlands and close inshore: seals, otters,
schools of dolphins and porpoise can be observed.
A visit to Sherkin is something special - a way of cutting adrift from
all the cares of the world. Why not try it? All we ask is to please keep Sherkin tidy and
enjoy yourselves
