Our
collection of Islands from Ireland, Italy and
Spain is now on-line.
There's
magic about islands - a sense of mystery and romance
surrounds a visit to an island, no matter where it is. Over
the years, Hollywood and the world's media have exploited
the magic, with the "island experience" immortalised
in South Pacific, Desert Island Discs and many more.
But
islands are real places, populated (for the most
part) by real people. On the South West Islands of Ireland
(home of emara), island communities have resisted the pull
of the mainland and faraway cities over the years. This
has required ingenuity, innovation and, more often than
not, grim determination.
The
internet opens up new possibilities for islands
and coastal communities. The tools of technology can simplify
communication and broaden awareness and understanding of
the unique qualities of island life. Education, health,
employment and business on islands can all benefit from
the Information Society, and quality of life can be enhanced
significantly.
emara
aims to bring you links to islands around the world,
and to encourage you to participate in inter-island networking
and commentary. We begin with a comprehensive internet guide
to the South West Islands of Ireland where you will also
have the ability to book accommodation and courses, and
to purchase some of the unique gift items produced on the
islands. Following are some international island links.
