The Naomh Ciarán II runs daily throughout the year, Christmas Day the only exception. Regular ferry services to Cape Clear began with the Dun Na Noir which ran from 1929 to 1957 when the first Naomh Ciarán took over. In 1982 the current purpose-built vessel went into service. The Naomh Ciarán II carries up to 100 passengers and crew and was, until 2001, a government-run service. The Naomh Ciarán II itself is 58 feet long by 20 feet in the beam with a 1.6 metre draught. It is driven by two 200 hp Caterpillar engines with a top speed of about 9.5 knots, although the journey to and from Cape is usually done at 8 to 8.5 knots. Department of Marine approved, the vessel is equipped with up-to-date communications and navigation equipment.
Cape Clear Island - eight miles from the Irish mainland - dominates the entrance to Roaring Water Bay on Ireland's south-west tip. The island is a forty-five minute ferry trip from Baltimore harbour. Its three square miles of rugged scenery and remote atmosphere attracts day-trippers, weekenders, holidaymakers and yachtspeople in the summer, birdwatchers in spring and autumn, and people in search of solitude or inspiration all the year round. For anglers there's rock fishing all round the island and boats available for hire to fish in the bay. Boat trips to watch the whales and dolphins which frequent the island's shores are also popular. Accommodation ranges from the island campsite overlooking south harbour to welcoming bed and breakfast. You can stay in the island's independent hostel or rent one of the comfortable self-catering houses on offer.
